Dr. Sam Stein is working on an apparatus that will allow insight into a patient's subconscious. This would allow doctors to directly enter a patient's mind and help relieve phobias and traumas, or bring them out of coma. The highly sophisticated computer he uses has developed an artificial intelligence that even allows for dialogue. He's on the way to success.

Sam is also madly in love with his colleague Rachel and she doesn't seem uninterested. Tragedy strikes in the form of an accident that leaves Rachel comatose, with not much hope for her to wake again.

Although his apparatus has not been tested on humans yet, Sam is so driven by his need to help her and his desire to have her back with him that he decides to try and travel into her subconscious. At first it seems to be working, but there is a factor he has not taken into account...
